London Packaging Week 2026: What We Saw in Luxury, Beauty and Sustainable Packaging

Sep 18, 2026

London Packaging Week 2026 brought brands, designers, material specialists and packaging manufacturers together at ExCeL London on 16 and 17 September.

The event covered luxury packaging, perfume and cosmetics, premium drinks, food and consumer products. Its programme moved between circular design, new materials, consumer expectations, efficiency and the continuing role of packaging in creating desire.

One of our UK colleagues attended the show, giving the Senlarry team a useful point of connection with the ideas being discussed in the European market. We also reviewed the official conference themes and the 2026 Innovation Awards finalists.

The strongest signal was not a single colour, box style or finish. It was a change in how packaging decisions are being made. Design, regulation, material selection, logistics and production feasibility are becoming harder to separate.

Here are five observations that matter for brands developing premium paper packaging.

1. Sustainability Is Moving into the Structural Brief

Sustainability is no longer being treated only as a material claim added near the end of a project. It is moving into the first structural decisions:

  • How large does the pack need to be?

  • Which components perform a real function?

  • Can the insert be made from paperboard or molded pulp?

  • Can mixed materials be separated?

  • Can the same visual impact be achieved with less material?

  • What evidence will the brand need for its target market?

This direction matched the event's Circular Futures theme, which focused on moving beyond broad compliance language towards packaging systems with practical environmental and commercial value.

For packaging buyers, this means the sustainability conversation should begin before the structural sample. Once an oversized box, complex insert or permanent mixed-material assembly has been approved, changing it becomes slower and more expensive.

2. Premium Packaging Is Becoming More Intentional

Luxury packaging is not disappearing. It is becoming more selective about where it uses material, decoration and complexity.

The strongest premium packs do not necessarily apply foil, UV, embossing, texture, ribbon and metal hardware at the same time. They choose one or two elements that carry the brand idea clearly, then control the execution.

This can mean:

  • a book-style structure that supports storytelling;

  • a precise drawer movement;

  • a restrained deboss on tactile paper;

  • a single metallic detail in the right position;

  • an insert that presents the product cleanly; or

  • a reveal sequence designed around how the customer opens the pack.

Less decoration does not automatically mean less luxury. In many cases, it puts more pressure on structure, paper quality, edge control, colour consistency and assembly precision. Quiet packaging is unforgiving. There is nowhere for poor execution to hide.

3. Launch Mailers and PR Kits Are Becoming a Distinct Packaging Category

The 2026 Innovation Awards finalists included launch mailers and limited-edition packs for beauty, fragrance, electronics and lifestyle brands. Examples included a Lancôme launch mailer, a Bose x US Open limited-edition mailer, and launch concepts associated with Miu Miu and Prada.

These projects show how PR packaging now sits between product packaging, campaign content and physical brand experience.

A PR kit may need to:

  • protect several products;

  • communicate a campaign story immediately;

  • open in a sequence that works on camera;

  • support influencer or press content;

  • arrive in presentation-ready condition; and

  • remain realistic to assemble and ship at scale.

For brands, the challenge is not simply to make the box larger or more dramatic. It is to design a controlled reveal without creating avoidable material, shipping volume or production risk.

For suppliers, PR kits require more than attractive mock-ups. Hinges, compartments, pull tabs, inserts, accessory fixing and repeated assembly all need to work consistently in production.

4. Material Innovation Still Has to Survive Production

The Next-Gen Solutions theme at London Packaging Week focused on substrates, manufacturing and new technologies. New papers, coatings, fibre structures and decorative materials can give brands fresh ways to differentiate.

But a material becomes commercially useful only when it can pass through the complete process:

  • printing;

  • colour control;

  • die-cutting;

  • creasing;

  • wrapping;

  • gluing;

  • assembly;

  • packing;

  • transport; and

  • repeat production.

This is particularly important for premium paper packaging. A beautiful specialty paper may crack at a fold, scuff during assembly, react differently to adhesive or show colour variation between batches.

The practical response is not to avoid new materials. It is to test them early. A small structural mock-up and a properly produced printed sample reveal different risks, and both can be necessary before mass production.

5. Efficiency Has Become Part of Good Design

The event's Efficiency Imperative theme reflected the pressure brands face from cost, changing supply chains and sustainability requirements.

Efficiency is often misunderstood as choosing the cheapest box. A better packaging-efficiency review looks at the whole system:

  • material utilisation;

  • assembly time;

  • number of components;

  • packing speed;

  • damage rate;

  • shipping volume;

  • pallet use;

  • number of suppliers; and

  • consistency across repeat orders.

A slightly higher unit cost can be commercially sensible if the structure reduces breakage, eliminates a component, improves packing speed or protects brand consistency across several SKUs.

This is where engineering and procurement need to meet. The most effective project is not always the design with the lowest first quotation. It is the design that performs reliably across production, logistics and customer use.

Packaging Examples That Captured the Direction of the Show

The 2026 finalist showcase included very different expressions of premium packaging.

What Beauty and Fragrance Brands Should Take from the Event

For beauty, skincare and fragrance packaging teams, five actions stand out:

  • Include the destination market and compliance requirements in the first brief.

  • Ask the supplier to explain the complete material architecture, not only the outer paper.

  • Use structure and tactility before adding unnecessary components.

  • Prototype the opening experience and the packing process at the same time.

  • Judge a concept by its mass-production stability, not only by the first handmade sample.

This approach allows brands to protect creativity while reducing late redesigns.

How Senlarry Is Applying These Signals

At Senlarry Packaging, our focus is not to copy a trade-show trend into the next project. It is to translate the direction of the market into better development questions.

For a new project, that can include:

  • reviewing structure and material together;

  • proposing paper-based or lower-complexity insert options;

  • testing specialty papers and finishes before bulk production;

  • reducing unnecessary layers and shipping volume;

  • documenting approved materials and changes;

  • engineering complex openings for stable assembly; and

  • maintaining colour, fit and finish from sample to production.

Good packaging still needs to create desire. The difference is that brands increasingly expect that desire to be supported by clearer material choices, regulatory awareness and reliable execution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is London Packaging Week?

London Packaging Week is a packaging event focused on luxury, beauty, drinks, food and consumer markets. It connects brands with designers, material specialists and packaging suppliers.

What were the main packaging themes in 2026?

The official conference themes included Circular Futures, The Conscious Consumer, Next-Gen Solutions, The Efficiency Imperative and Designed to Desire.

Are luxury packaging and sustainability moving in opposite directions?

Not necessarily. Premium packaging can use structure, material quality and controlled finishing while also reducing unnecessary layers, improving separation and documenting material choices more clearly.

Why are PR kits receiving more attention?

PR kits combine physical packaging with launch storytelling and social content. They must protect multiple items, create a clear reveal and remain feasible to assemble and ship.

From Inspiration to Production

Trade shows are useful when they sharpen decisions, not when they simply produce a folder of attractive photos.

If you are developing a beauty, fragrance, electronics or premium gift-packaging project, send us the product dimensions, quantity, launch date and target market. We can help translate the concept into a structure that is visually distinctive, production-ready and better prepared for current sourcing requirements.
